Were the Twin Towers poorly designed or did the terrorists take advantage of a unique building design?

I know nothing about architecture or building design in any way but I saw a video breaking down the system in which the towers were able to maintain amazing office space while not compromising a strong core to the building. As seen in the images posted.

I suppose a more in depth version of my question is; Was this a mistake or would any building of that height have come down after being struck by a plane that size? Any and all opinions would be appreciated, thank you.
